There is something irresistible about an octopus. Perhaps it is the intelligence in those watchful eyes, the elegant curl of eight tentacles, or the suspicion that every octopus knows far more than it is prepared to tell us. In The Octopus Cabinet, ten peculiar cephalopods have taken charge of an underwater collection of books, keys, maps, shells, clocks and other curious treasures.
This free printable collection is the second chapter in my Curious Kingdom Beneath the Sea series. It follows Peculiar Fish of the Briny Deep, sharing the same luminous turquoise, petrol teal, coral orange and warm-gold palette while exploring a completely different corner of our imaginary ocean world.
What Is Included in The Octopus Cabinet?
The download contains 10 individual high-resolution JPG illustrations and a convenient 10-page printable PDF. Every design is US Letter portrait size, measuring 8.5 x 11 inches or 2550 x 3300 pixels at 300 DPI.
The ten illustrations include:
- An elderly octopus librarian guarding bottles of forgotten stories
- A sly keeper of antique underwater keys
- A small, inquisitive collector of bottled wonders
- A flamboyant octopus musician performing several instruments at once
- A solemn cartographer mapping islands that do not exist
- A meticulous clockmaker surrounded by tide clocks and tiny gears
- Two old friends taking tea beneath a coral anemone
- An elegant curator arranging rare shells
- A tiny blue octopus living inside a many-drawered cabinet
- A grand underwater curiosity room inhabited by three collectors
The pages contain no added titles, branding or watermarks, so you can use the complete illustrations or crop and resize them to suit your personal creative projects.
Make Whimsical Ocean Greeting Cards
Reduce the illustrations to approximately 5 x 7 inches and mount them onto folded card blanks for memorable birthday cards, notecards or invitations. The characters are expressive enough to suggest their own messages: the unimpressed clockmaker is ideal for a belated birthday, while the two tea-drinking friends would make a lovely friendship card.
Try printing onto matte presentation paper, trimming around the artwork and adding a narrow coral, gold or deep-teal mat. A small shell charm or a few gold ink details can add dimension without competing with the illustration.
Create an Octopus Junk Journal
The full-page pictures make striking journal covers, dividers and decorative feature pages. They pair beautifully with tea-dyed paper, sea-green watercolor washes, vintage ledger paper, lace, gauze, shells, old maps and brass-toned findings.
Print selected illustrations at postcard or ATC size to create pockets, journal cards and small pieces of tuck-in ephemera. You could even give every octopus a name and build a journal around the mysterious objects it has collected. A cabinet of curiosities should always contain at least one item that nobody can explain.
Print a Curious Coastal Gallery Wall
For unusual bathroom, studio or reading-nook décor, print three coordinated designs and place them in simple antique-gold, dark wood or teal frames. The Librarian, Musician and Shell Curator make a lively trio; the quieter Bottle Collector, Tea Scene and Tiny Tenant create a softer display.
The illustrations can also be reduced for dollhouse art, miniature gallery walls, matchbox shrines or a dimensional shadow box. Layer a printed scene behind paper coral, shells and acetate bubbles to turn the flat artwork into a small underwater theatre.
Printing Suggestions
Use your printer's “actual size” or 100% setting for full US Letter pages. Choose “fit to page” only if your printer cannot print close to the paper edge. For smaller projects, select the desired scale or print multiple pages per sheet.
Matte presentation paper or smooth cardstock gives rich colour and crisp detail for wall art and cards. Standard or slightly heavier copy paper is easier to fold, layer and distress for junk journals. Always check your printer's recommended paper weight before using heavy cardstock.
