Today I am sharing The Gilded Stage, a free collection of 12 printable opulent theatre backdrops created for junk journals, scrapbooking, miniature theatres, digital collage and imaginative paper crafts. Each page features one complete landscape stage scene inspired by grand opera houses, rococo playhouses, Victorian music halls and magical storybook theatres.
The pages are deliberately left without performers or foreground characters. That open stage is yours to fill with photographs, quotations, paper dolls, dancers, fairies, vintage figures, seasonal decorations or an entirely original cast.

Every page is supplied as a high-resolution JPG, and the collection also includes a convenient 12-page PDF.
The designs measure 11 × 8.5 inches in landscape US Letter format. Each JPG is 3300 × 2550 pixels at 300 DPI, with the artwork extending to the edges of the page.
Make a theatrical junk journal page
Use one of the stages as a feature page, inside cover or centre spread in a junk journal. The open performance area is perfect for a photograph, quotation, poem or piece of journaling. Add velvet ribbon, lace, gold paper, vintage tickets or tiny stars to create extra dimension without hiding the architecture.
For a particularly dramatic spread, place a paper figure or portrait on the stage and continue the theme on the facing page with theatre tickets, costume sketches or music ephemera.
Create a miniature paper theatre
These pages make ready-made scenery for a shadow box, cigar-box theatre, book nook or small paper diorama. Print the chosen stage at the size required for your box, then add layered characters on tabs or small stands.
The celestial and fairy-tale stages would be especially lovely for moon-and-star stories, while the crimson, purple and black stages suit opera, masquerade, gothic or magical performances.
Turn photographs into the star of the show
A theatre backdrop can transform an ordinary scrapbook layout into a story. Place a dance, wedding, costume, school-play or family photograph in the open stage area so the subject appears to be performing.
You could also use the design for heritage photographs, especially portraits with formal clothing. The blush and ivory stages create a romantic setting, while emerald, burgundy and crimson provide deeper colour and contrast.
Add paper dolls and printable characters
The empty stages are ideal backgrounds for paper dolls, fashion illustrations and vintage figures. Print the stage as a full page for a journal or scale it down for a card, tag, small theatre or interactive children’s storytelling project.

You do not have to print the artwork. Open a JPG in your favourite graphics or photo-editing program and add digital characters, book covers, photographs, quotations or fantasy elements.

Adapt the stages for seasonal projects
The same theatre can host an entirely different production with a few added elements:
Add pumpkins, ravens and candlelight for Halloween.
Place a tree, wrapped gifts and snowflakes on stage for Christmas.

Printing tips
Print at “actual size” or 100% for a full 11 × 8.5-inch landscape page. Matte presentation paper will give a richer result than ordinary copier paper, while lightweight cardstock works well for shadow boxes and dimensional crafts.
If your printer does not support borderless printing, it may add a narrow white edge. You can leave the edge in place for binding or trim it away after printing. The pages can also be scaled down to fit smaller journals, cards and miniature projects.
